Title of dissertation: LENGTH SPECTRAL RIGIDITY OF NON-POSITIVELY CURVED SURFACES Jeffrey Frazier, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Dissertation directed by: Professor William Goldman Department of Mathematics Length spectral rigidity is the question of under what circumstances the geometry of a surface can be determined, up to isotopy, by knowing only the lengths of its closed geodesics. It is known that this can be done for negatively curved Riemannian surfaces, as well as for negatively-curved cone surfaces. Steps are taken toward showing that this holds also for flat cone surfaces, and it is shown that the lengths of closed geodesics are also enough to determine which of these three categories a geometric surface falls into. Techniques of Gromov, Bonahon, and Otal are explained and adapted, such as topological conjugacy, geodesic currents, Liouville measures, and the average angle between two geometric surfaces. Semi-Analytical Solution for Free Vibration Analysis of Thick Laminated Curved Panels with Power-Law Distribution FG Layers and Finite Length Via Two-Dimensional GDQ Method

This paper deals with free vibration analysis of thick Laminated curved panels with finite length, based on the three-dimensional elasticity theory. Because of using two-dimensional generalized differential quadrature method, the present approach makes possible vibration analysis of cylindrical panels with two opposite axial edges simply supported and arbitrary boundary conditions including Fre...

Polymer Adsorption on Curved Surfaces: Finite chain length corrections

The structural properties of polymers adsorbed onto a surface have been widely investigated using self-consistent mean-field theories. Recently, analytical mean-field theories have been applied to study polymer adsorption on curved surfaces but all in the context of the ground state dominance approximation in which the polymer chain length (N) is essentially infinite. Using an expression for th...

Marked Length Spectrum Rigidity in Nonpositive Curvature with Singularities

Combining several previously known arguments, we prove marked length spectrum rigidity for surfaces with nonpositively curved Riemannian metrics away from a finite set of cone-type singularities with cone angles > 2π. With an additional condition, we can weaken the requirement on one metric to ‘no conjugate points.’

Lectures on Marked Length Spectrum Rigidity (preliminary Version)

Let M be a closed Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvatures are all negative, and denote by C the set of free homotopy classes of closed curves in M . Negative curvature implies that in each free homotopy class, there is a unique closed geodesic. This defines a marked length spectrum function ` : C → R>0 which assigns to the class g the length `(g) of this closed geodesic. Burns and Katok ...

Marked length spectral rigidity for flat metrics

In this paper we prove that the space of flat metrics (nonpositively curved Euclidean cone metrics) on a closed, oriented surface is marked length spectrally rigid. In other words, two flat metrics assigning the same lengths to all closed curves differ by an isometry isotopic to the identity. The novel proof suggests a stronger rigidity conjecture for this class of metrics.
